Solo and group traveling tips

Check your privilege:

Yes! We, Americans are privileged. We have to remember we are in another country. Most of us do not speak their language. We do not know their customs. And, we tend to frown upon anything that is different from what we are accustomed to. Just keep this mind when you have to pay to use a public restroom, when you’re required to cover up (Ladies), when they do not open bright and early at 8:00am or close down for siesta. Basically, we are not in America anymore so please respect their customs, rules and daily lives.

Be on time:

Please, please pretty please leave CT at home. I know it’s difficult, but there are others waiting on you and a schedule that is being followed. Well, unless it’s your day on your own, then by all means take your precious time.

Make friends with other travelers:

Group travel is the perfect opportunity to meet new people. To learn, grow and create lasting friendships. We are meant to be in community, so, what better way than while traveling in a group. Talk to someone you do not know. Share a meal with them, take a walk or sit next to them. We never know who, or why people are placed on our lives.

Tip:

Some countries do not require tipping. In Paris, for example, you only give one to two euros as a tip. Look up where you are visiting tipping customs and follow them. Always, in my opinion, tip your tour guide, uber/taxi driver and at a restaurant where tipping is allowed. This is a service they are providing. So, let us show our gratitude and respect.

Respect their quirks:

Everyone has quirks. Some more obvious than others. They may not be yours, but please respect them. You do not have to marry the quirky traveler, just respect them. As much respect is wanted, is much respect given.

Share your knowledge:

Please share your knowledge with the group. Everyone in the group have different interest. Everyone will have done research about the location your visiting. Share what you found. Someone else may find what you found valuable and may want to visit, experience with you. I always look for jazz clubs. There may be others that are interested in jazz and would love to hangout. It makes for having shared experiences to talk about down the line. Also, you may know something that isn’t common knowledge about the location. Share, share and share. It could be for safety, it could be for food in which case make sure you share.

Have your own must-do or must-see:

Going along with share your knowledge, research to make sure what is a must-see on your list. If this is a group or solo trip, it is still your trip so make it your own. Make sure you get out of it what you’re expecting. If it’s to see the Eiffel Tower, take a Gondola ride, walk the Great Wall of China, or eat at a certain restaurant; make sure this happens for you. Whatever it is, make sure your trip satisfy your reason for visiting this location.

Speak up, but listen well:

Speak up, but make sure you listen well. Everyone has opinions. Respectfully speak your opinion, but also listen to those around you. Learn about the location you are visiting from the tour guide, hotel and people you encounter. Leave with more knowledge of others and self.
